The Glasgow Children’s Hospital
The Glasgow Children’s Hospital and stands in Garnethill at the corner of Scott Street and Buccleuch Street. It was the last city in UK to build a hospital just for children. It opened on 20 December 1882 and received its first patient on 8 January 1883 and received its first patient on 8 January 1883. It had 3 wards and 52 beds for poor children between 2 and 12. On the top floor was an operating theatre. lt was lit by gas lamps. The first doctors were William McEwan and Hector Cameron. They visited the hospital two or three times a week. The hospital survived entirely on charitable donations. Another hospital was built nearby in West Graham Street called the Dispensary for Sick Children in 1888 and treated many poor children. In 1914 the hospital moved to Yorkhill in the west of Glasgow. The Dispensary closed in the 1950s. When I got to know about this hospital, I thought that in my country we still suffer from diseases that kill children nowadays. This hospital was there more than 150 years ago and I imagined how many children’s lives were saved there and how it alleviated their suffering from diseases. By Salem |
