Garnethill Synagogue
Garnethill Synagogue was built in September 1879-81. It was the first one to be built in Scotland. The meaning of the word ‘synagogue’ comes from similar words in Old French, Latin and Greek, meaning ‘a gathering’ or ‘to bring together’. Inside we can find a place of worship and community. On the amazing stained glass windows on the ceiling are the Ten Commandments in Hebrew. There are 580 seats. 362 seats are for men and 218 seats for women in the gallery. In the history of Jewish people in Scotland, they are first mentioned in the minutes of Edinburgh Town Council in 1665. In my country of Sudan, at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries a number of Jews arrived, such as workers and traders. This helped to expand their relationships in the community. They built a lot of temples and houses in Khartoum an Omdurman, which is on the banks of the River Nile in east- central Sudan. Garnethill Synagogue is a Glasgow City Council Category A listed heritage building. By Hamil |
